Want your students to get their hands on some real-world technology? Turn your library or multi-purpose room into a biology or GIS lab for a day! Programs are designed for students in grades K–6. Combine various topics as part of your microscope package.

Microscope Labs

Zoom in on biology! A compound microscope is provided to each student in a guided exploration of objects invisible to the naked eye.

Capacity: 30 students

Time required: 25 minutes
Fee: $180 includes set-up and four workshops; $40 for each additional workshop.

Up Close With Everyday Objects
For students in kindergarten
Content themes: Motion, Energy, Engineering, Technology, History of Science & Technology
Look through magnifying glasses and microscopes to view items like fabrics, magazine pages, and feathers.

The World of Microscopes
For grades 1–2
Content themes: Motion, Energy, Engineering, Technology, History of Science & Technology
Make a water lens microscope. View various living and non-living specimens through a compound microscope.

Cells and Diversity
For grades 3–4
Content themes: Motion, Energy, Engineering, Technology, History of Science & Technology
What are cells and how do they differ? Make, view, and compare slides of plant and animal cells.

Life Under a Microscope
For grades 5–6
Content themes: Motion, Energy, Engineering, Technology, History of Science & Technology
Learn about microorganisms as seen through a microscope. View and draw living organisms.

GIS/GPS labs

We offer cross-curriculum, hands-on workshops for GIS/GPS. These labs encompass biology, technology, math, and geography in a two-class-period format.

Two workshop/day minimum
Capacity: 30 students
Time required: 90 minutes
Fee: $300 includes set-up and four workshops; $100 for each additional workshop.

Carnegie Science Center will provide:
  • 15 GPS units
  • 15 laptops (GIS portion)
  • An instructor
Schools will need to have:
  • 3–5 parent volunteers, teachers, or aides
  • Classroom space
  • 1 or more teacher(s) to chaperone

The GPS portion of the workshop will be held outdoors, so students should dress accordingly. Program is not available December–February.

School Yard Scavengers

For grades 3–6
Nature-related caches will challenge the students to connect the outdoors to their classroom lessons. Google'™ Earth will bring it home!

"Cache" Collectors

For grades 6–8
Students will experience geocaching as the means of investigating water quality issues that affect streams and rivers. Students will use Google Earth to locate waterways and plot information.
